Our Arts Programme
Music, art, dance, drama, and language form an integral part of our curriculum.
Our creative arts programme inspires students to explore music, performing and visual arts through exploration, creativity, experimentation, and imagination. We offer an in-class language programme that enriches learning with French, German and Te Reo Māori.
Music and Performing Arts
We provide a hands-on music and performing arts programme that provides all students with the opportunity to play instruments, create music, sing and perform.
Our music approach encourages creativity, exploration, improvisation, and experimentation. Tamariki (children) enjoy singing, dancing, and playing music when they draw from their own imagination and cultural experiences. Our programme encourages a unity between language, movement, and music and nurtures expressive behaviour.
Every second year, the whole school puts on a production where every child is given a part.
“Music for children is never music alone but music connected with movement, dance and speech, not to be listened to, but meaningful only in active participation.”
– Carl Orff.
Visual Arts
We weave visual arts into our everyday learning in the forest and in the classroom. Tamariki (children) express their creativity through painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, and mixed-media projects. They experiment with clay, fabric, natural resources, recycled materials, and digital tools.
We introduce them to the works and techniques of renowned artists. By studying these artists, students gain inspiration and insight into different artistic styles and cultural contexts, enriching their own creative processes.
Our art activities encourage imagination, problem-solving, and self-expression, helping students see the world through a creative lens while developing fine motor skills and confidence in their artistic abilities.
Languages
We offer an in-class language programme where students learn French, German, Te Reo Māori, and New Zealand Sign Language.
Te reo and Tikanga Māori are included in conversations, customs, art, crafts, our physical environment, school events, forest school, and daily learning throughout the year. We begin our mornings with karakia, sing waiata together, and incorporate te reo into our daily korero, wānaga, and toi.
There are many benefits to learning a second language for our students, including enhanced cognitive abilities, cultural understanding, and communication skills.
