Student life at Matahui School is rich with opportunities for exploration, creativity, and connection.
Our first week back has seen students making the most of our beautiful outdoor environment. Break times have been filled with hut building in the ngāhere, sandpit play, ball swing adventures, and discovering insects and cicada shells.
Outdoor learning is an important part of our approach as an innovative primary school in Tauranga, helping students build confidence, creativity, and a strong connection with the natural world.
Garden-to-Table Learning: A Memorable Pesto Feast
One of the highlights of the term, has been Kōwhai Class harvesting fresh basil from their garden beds.
Students worked together to transform their harvest into homemade pesto and shared a delicious pesto pasta feast. The experience brought learning to life, combining gardening, food preparation, teamwork, and pride in their achievements.
Experiences like this help students develop practical skills, independence, and a deeper understanding of where food comes from.
Student Leadership Opportunities
Leadership development is an important part of education at Matahui School.
Each term, student councillors are selected to represent their peers and contribute to school life. The purpose is to provide the children with an authentic context to build leadership qualities and have a ‘voice’ in the school.
These students play an important role in building a positive and inclusive school culture.
